I painted this the other day at Jamie's, deep in the woods down several "ledges" in Pallenville at the foothills of the Catskill Mountains. She has shown me so many waterfalls in the Catskills. She has at least 4 locations of waterfalls on her property that I know of and I think there may be more....how lucky she is to have these destinations right on her property! I did another painting of this same one where

I am on the other side of the stream and actually sitting on the stones in the water.

I arrived in Saranac Lake tonight. Our house is on Flower Lake - whaaat? I'll find out about that tomorrow when I awake at the crack of dawn. Anyway - a beautiful moonrise before me as I sat on the front porch.....at least I got a painting in today. It took me all day to get up here due to car probs. First, I needed a new tire then I load the car up to gogo and the brake hits the floor! Where's all my brake fluid? A rusted out brake line that needed to be repaired before the long drive. Thanks God for the available mechanic who did the job pronto so I could get outa town and up to the Adirondacks today. Nighty night - must get to sleep so that I can get out there painting tomorrow.

It's all what keeps me coming back to painting the water. I never feel like I have it mastered and then when I look at what I've painted it pleases me - usually.

Overcast Day on the Creek - 11"x17" watercolor

Today I cooled off next to this creek that I've taken a liking to. The air was humid and heavy.

My remedy for this condition is to go paint next any body of water.

I can dip my feet or completely submerge myself.

Last week I painted this same view when the blue sky was vivid.

I did take a dip that day. It was that 100+ degree day.

I like seeing these side by side.

I am training myself to get better at painting reflections and the currents of water.

I really like the challenges it presents. You have to capture the nature of the movement of the water. It will never be precise. This is similar to painting quick gesture poses of the human figure. You have to think fast and record it before the memory disappears from your brain.

This is the second painting at the Chatham waterfalls the other day. There were people jumping in the falls and swimming by this time in the late afternoon. I didn't include them but I will in the future. There was one couple that were the first to come to the falls and I saw them from a distance and waved to them as they waved back from up high on the rocks. Ironically, I met them at a BBQ tonight on the outskirts of Hudson. I recognized them immediately and the first thing I overheard them talking to someone about was the amazing two days of swimming at the falls so I went over to introduce myself and said I was the one painting at the falls and waving to them. Serendipity !

Today I ventured with Jamie, my plein air buddy, to the waterfall in Chatham by the train tracks across from the bowling alley off rte 295. It was a beautiful day to be there and it was the first time I did plein air painting there. I have, in the past, taken pictures to paint from in my studio. It was pretty quiet until a little after 5 and then it became populated with kids jumping off the rocks and sliding through the tumbling white waters. I will definitely be going back there all summer long. It's easy to set up and plenty of views. There is actually a train track above the dam which is at the top of the falls. I just love painting waterfalls.

This was the last painting of a long day, the same day I painted 3 waterfall paintings.

It is at North-South Lake looking southwest toward ? what mountains tops? (maybe Jamie will fill in that question mark, she knows the answer) There are some real issues with this watercolor painting but I think I still like the way it looks. That can happen when you work in this medium because there is such a huge Artistic license that I get to use. I love the way the mountain peak on the right bled out into a volcano. I overworked the clouds and I like the way they look next to the volcano. I like the colors. I like the imperfect texture on the tree covered range and then the reflections and texture on the surface of the water. The highlighted little island in front of the tree covered range is like a coffee table in the center of the painting - oh well - it's all good and part of the process to do not so good paintings too.

I painted this as a study sketch with my feet dipping in and out of the water at Jamie's waterfall. Yes, this is her personal waterfall. I told her that I would feel like I won the lottery if I had a waterfall on my property. When it's hot outside all you have to do is dip into this natural made cooler - ahhhh- Heaven on Earth. There are many views to paint in these little falls with pooling waters that trickle down the stepped mossy rock platforms.

I spent the first part of the day painting Mossy Waterfall in Palenville on Jamie's estate at the foothills of the Catskill Mountains. The falls are roaring due to all the rain we've had as of late. I'm going to paint there again tomorrow morning and you'll see the results....when I am painting the waterfalls, it's like working my way out of an abstract maze of motion, color and forms that my brush puts to the page. Sometimes, when looking up close at what I am painting, it is almost unrecognizable, then I snap a photo and see the work in 2d and it begins to come together and I know what to do next to pull it all together.

Double Rambling Waterfall - 10"x14" watercolor

This is a new passion for me - to paint waterfalls plein air. I spent the morning in Palenville, NY up in the foothills of the Catskill mountains. It was a short hike to the falls on some private property of Jamie's neighbors. How fortunate am I? I hope to paint waterfalls every weekend.

This is a black silhouette painting of a large colorful bouquet of orchids, roses, forsythia, tulips, snap dragons, asparagus ferns, eucalyptus, curly willow branches.

7"x 9" watercolor Inspired from a photo taken in 1901. These days this view is blocked by houses built on the spit on land that juts out in front of Rocky Point. The tower on the house at Rocky Point is visible through the trees. There's that tree (maybe, maybe not) on the far right that appears in the two previous paintings that I did. $150.


9"x12" ink Inspired by a vintage photo taken in 1901 on Rocky Point in Rowayton, Ct. Again, as I mentioned in yesterday's painting, it's the whimsical charm of these vintage photos that have inspired me.


12"x16" watercolor, gouache + graphite on Stonehenge paper I did this painting in the Adirondacks in August. I needed to do a finishing touch in the foreground and I finally got around to it. I sometimes, let my paintings hang around so that I can look at them throughout the day as I walk by them. I do this when I am not sure exactly what I need to do to finalize a piece. It was the case for this one. I was loving the reflections and the colors but something was missing. ....hmmmm, I am not even sure that I did the right thing by adding in the foliage in the fore but it was true to what the actual view was. See photo below.

22"x30" watercolor I have been buying beautiful stems from a local flower grower that sells at our farmers market every Saturday. I love her offerings and for only $7 I made this arrangement. Flowers: Larkspur, Bee Balm, Falling Stars and I don't know the name of the light pink flowers....anyone out there know? This painting sells for $400
