Holiday Scenes - watercolor winter landscapes by Gretchen Kelly

Both are 4.5x6.5 painted in watercolors

I painted these miniatures for Christmas cards this year. I was inspired by some plein air paintings I did in the Adirondacks this past summer. I love this iconic scene with the reflections in the lakes, the moon and the stars, the shapes of the trees and never-ending color cominations that I can dream up and somehow they all work.
Merry Christmas! and Peace in the New Year.

all three of these miniatures are inspired by my summer visit in the Adirondacks. I painted several plein air watercolors like these and this memory is still with me.This dusk with evergreens iconic view is perfect for making some holiday cards. So that's what I did.

Sunspot on the Sound - Rowayton Daily Paintings by Gretchen Kelly

8"x24" ink
This is the view looking from the Belle Island bridge towards Sheffield Island. My idea was certainly to paint a monochromatic seascape. I was intending to use a sepia color. But I came across all my ink sample colors from Goullet Pen and I couldn't resist using the Mahogany color ink. It looks very magenta and not as brown as I thought it would be but I like it. Then it got me on the track of painting more sea scenes in colors rather than black or sepia. I'll be posting those in the next several days.

$300.

Across the Street from 101 Rowayton Ave. - Rowayton Daily Paintings by Gretchen Kelly

9"x12" acrylic on wood
I took this photo last year on my Rowayton walk in October and now, finally,
I have gotten around to painting it. There was so much detail.
I love all the curves contrasting with the architectural details of lines,
angles and shadows. The neutralized colors of the house also contrast with the
bright golden grass reeds in the urns that are symetrically  placed.
There's a lot of yin and yang at play.
$300.

Blue Mailbox on Brown Place - Rowayton Daily Paintings by Gretchen Kelly

9'x12" acryiic on wood

It's not really about the blue mailbox. It's the white picket fence that holds back the hydrangea and graphically ignites the composition and echos the porch railing. It's all structured and right angles but still it's graceful and cozy looking. The entrance is inviting and you want to sit on the porch with lemonade in the breeze.
This painting and the entire series of Rowayton Daily Paintings and more can be seen at Brendan's 101 starting on Dec. 16th at 6-8. Come to the opening for some Holiday Cheer!

$300.
