Field of Texture - original contemporary landscape by Gretchen Kelly
15" x 19" watercolor, encaustic, graphite, gold leaf on heavy watercolor paper
I painted this in 2007 and wanted to re-post it on this blog that features my landscapes. I will be re-posting some of my scenic works here from time to time in order that they be seen again and possibly find their new owner. I showed this painting in my Daily Painters from the Hudson Valley landscape show in Rhinebeck, last summer. I got a lot of positive feedback about this painting. It has a lot of technique going on with the gold leaf playing against the encaustic and contrasted with the watercolor paint..... many mediums creating contrast that tells this winter story before you. I really like this one and think it is worthy of some a few more in this genre.

Orange Cloud at Sunset- original contemporary landscape by Gretchen Kelly
9.5" x 12" - watercolor, gouache, pastel + graphite on paper
There was a orange creamsicle cloud - just like this - in the sky. When I got home that day I saw on Facebook that someone else had seen it across the Hudson River. I love serendipity!

Two landscape light studies in watercolor by Gretchen Kelly
Light Study on Hudson - 5"x8.5" watercolor
Note to self about light in this rendition:
Spotlights of color were cast across the river as I rode the train down the Hudson River a couple of weeks ago.
Clouds + Foliage light study - 5.5"x8.5" watercolor
Note to self about light in this rendition:
While driving south along the Hudson River the light cast in the late afternoon created halos around the clouds, the reeds and leftover willow tree leaves on the branches dangling in the breeze.

Sunset Glow - original contemporary watercolor landscape by Gretchen Kelly
9.5" x 12/5" watercolor + graphite on paper
I caught some amazing sunsets and cloud formations on film this fall and now am looking back at some of these photos to paint them. It surprizes me that I haven't done more Fall landscapes. I am focusing more on painting landscapes because I have had a lot of positive feedback about them and I sell them as much as I sell my figurative works, not to mention that I love observing nature and it's ever-changing colors and cycles.

WInter Blues- original contemporary watercolor landscape painting by Gretchen Kelly
9.5" x 12.5" watercolor + graphite on paper
I love the dusk blue color that is off in the distance on the Catskill Mountains through the reddish brown of bare trees. I painted this one from memory and it is when I am driving through the beautiful countryside of farms and big sky, big river, big mountains. Even though winter is not my favorite thing, I love how the landscape rolls out under blankets of snow and broad masses of blue colors.

Twilight Treetops - original twilight landscape by Gretchen Kelly
9.5"x12.5" watercolor, graphite on paper
I did this from memory. When driving last week, along the lower roads parallel to the Hudson River, at that twilight hour there was the lacey treetops feathered with pink and mauve and lavender. The sky blends into pink then yellow then aqua. Nice memory.

Taconic Parkway Landscape- original pastel landscape by Gretchen Kelly
7" x 10.5"- oil pastel + graphite on paper
This little landscape was done 3 years ago. It was posted to my other blog one of the first weeks that I started blogging over three years ago. It is one in a series of fall landscapes. I have always loved these with their neon brilliance and carefree scribbles.
